Securing Transportation's Critical Infrastructure
To impart knowledge and take action securing transportation's critical infrastructure.
#CyberSecureITS
In today’s connected world, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) play vital roles managing our Nation's critical infrastructure including roadways, interstates, intersections, ports, mass transit lines, city traffic, and urban mobility. As Connected Infrastructure (IoT), Roadways (V2I/V2V), and Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) have become a reality, cyber securing our infrastructure and protecting the safety of our citizens is critical, yet continues to be overlooked and undervalued.
#CyberSecureITS is a call to take action, bringing knowledge, awareness, and movement to secure our country's transportation infrastructure and citizens. Faced with ever growing threats and malicious attacks, the time is now to take action and Cyber Secure ITS.
Through collaboration and education a community was formed to impart knowledge and take action securing transportation's critical infrastructure. Join the movement and take action now to #CyberSecureITS!
#CyberSecureITS is a call to take action, bringing knowledge, awareness, and movement to secure our country's transportation infrastructure and citizens.
Spread across the U.S. roadways and on the corner of virtually every intersections are hundreds of thousands of unsecured targets for attack...ITS devices and traffic cabinets. Exposed at the Edge and housed inside cabinets are intelligent devices and connectivity that if left unprotected, leaves our country's infrastructure and citizens exposed for critical safety risks. Securing access to our infrastructure and managing key holders is critical as we are now exposed to an entire gamut of risk from seemingly harmless vandalism to more malicious physical and cyber-attacks. Used to store and protect complex equipment that connects and controls traffic signals , vehicles, and digital road signage, traffic cabinets are critical for road and highway safety.
Managing the security and access of our ITS networks and infrastructure is an absolute must as we not only expose controls to connected intersections but also allow access to the entire network of traffic controllers, connected vehicles, cameras, digital signage, and IoT devices. Interconnecting cities, states, and citizens, ITS networks are not isolated anymore. Failure to secure them puts both agencies and their citizens at serious risk of cyber attack.
Despite the fact that physical access to traffic infrastructure can have an immediate and widespread impact, the majority of cabinets are secured with a generic physical key that could easily be obtained and duplicated. Hundreds of Thousands of key-holders currently have access to a piece of our country's Critical Infrastructure. This presents a serious threat as we continue to rely more on technology to operate and control our vehicles and signal systems.
The first step to a Cyber Secure ITS is to secure the edge of our networks. This starts with the key-holders of our infrastructure. Mechanical locks and keys that come standard with ITS and Traffic cabinets simply are not adequate to protect the critical transportation infrastructure housed within. Cyber Securing ITS must eliminate the use of mechanical keys #Getridofthe#2
Do you know who has access to your ITS devices and traffic cabinets? Physical access to traffic infrastructure exposes agencies to both physical and cyber related attacks. With Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) deployments, and more IoT connected devices than ever before, legal and liability issues are a reality for agencies operating these assets. Entry into an ITS cabinet must be secured, managed and monitored in real-time. For the first time, a more robust solution now exists in both an "online" and "offline" options.
Intelligent Key Solutions like the ASSA ABLOY Medeco XT TrafficLock offer a fast, easy and affordable option to upgrade the security of traffic cabinets. Electronically programmed credentials can open specific locks on a designated schedule by user and can be expired or revoked to meet security needs. This is what is termed an "offline" solution, when live monitoring, remote access, and door alarm features are not required.
Online Access Control provides critical security of the highest level by enabling real-time monitoring and remote lock or unlock capability at the traffic cabinet. The world's very first "online" cyber-intelligent fully integrated, cost effective access control system for traffic and ITS cabinets is now available to Cyber Secure ITS. With the introduction of the SmartLock 8000, transportation agencies can now economically deploy industry standard security policies at their traffic cabinets for managing physical access and cyber control in real-time. Combing the intelligence of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and OSDP encrypted connectivity, the SmartLock 8000 boasts the world’s first fully integrated access control system designed from the ground up for traffic cabinets. Featuring the advanced technology of Flex-Connect, the SmartLock 8000 gives agencies the greatest flexibility for protecting critical infrastructure.
Management of critical infrastructure and access control must be handled securely and in real time. Centrally managed software combining access control with video verification, asset management, and work flow operations allows increased awareness and response times for transportation agency operations. Knowledge of who is inside your cabinets or how long a contractor was onsite should be made available through one single pane of glass. Agencies must have the ability to remotely lock down every cabinet on the network, grant permissions or open a cabinet with a stroke of a key. Cyber Secure Software is now available for ITS.
The time is right now to be taking steps to ensure the security of our critical infrastructure systems. Cyber security attacks are a real threat for transportation infrastructure as we depend on the digital world more with every passing day. It is time to take an active approach to securing our ITS devices. Contact us for more information on how we can secure our country's infrastructure #CyberSecureITS
